It is no secret that the motor industry is rapidly changing. Change isn’t always great for everyone – it’s clear that some well-loved brands might disappear in the near future. I had this nagging question when I had the new Honda CR-V on test.
Honda has long been synonymous with reliability, and the new Honda CR-V is a testament to that enduring reputation. But will this be enough to save the Japanese legend from the Chinese invasion? I might not have all the answers, but one thing’s certain: Honda still makes solid, impeccable products. I drove the CR-V and came back convinced that the brand still has a lot of oxygen in it. I tested the top-range Exclusive, packed with all the bells and whistles.
The Looks
The latest CR-V has a fresh, modern look with sleeker lines, a bolder front, and a spacious interior, offering a comfortable ride for both driver and passengers. Upgraded materials and tech features add to the cabin’s appeal, blending function and style beautifully. Its roomy design is a standout, providing plenty of space for families and adventurers, with rear seats that adjust or fold flat for added convenience.
The Drive
Under the hood of the CR-V lies a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that delivers a smooth and steady ride. While previous models have made a name for themselves with their reliability and performance, the new CR-V has raised the bar with a refined suspension system that enhances stability for a comfortable ride quality which we need on South Africa’s diverse roads. For someone who lives in a small town, I navigate potholes and gravel roads daily, and such a formidable vehicle comes in handy in my commutes.
Technological advancements
Honda has placed a strong emphasis on technology in the new CR-V. The infotainment system is intuitive and user-friendly, featuring a touch display that integrates seamlessly with smartphones through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety features, like Honda Sensing, come standard, offering advanced driver-assistance systems that enhance the overall driving experience.
Brand Reliability
The Honda brand has built a stellar reputation for durability and longevity, and the new CR-V upholds this image. South African consumers have consistently valued vehicles that require less maintenance and deliver excellent resale value, both of which this SUV promises. Honda’s robust engineering means fewer mechanical issues over time, making it a dependable choice for both urban commuting and weekend getaways.
Competitors
When measured against competitors like the Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mazda CX-60 to name but a few, the Honda CR-V holds its ground firmly. While these rivals also boast strong credentials, the CR-V distinguishes itself with a more balanced ride, a spacious cabin, and an array of tech features that appeal to tech-savvy consumers. Honda’s brand loyalty plays a crucial role—many previous Honda
owners often express a desire to stay within the brand for their next vehicle.
Verdict and Pricing
The new Honda CR-V emerges as a solid contender in the South African SUV market. Its blend of reliability, comfort, advanced technology, and substantial cargo capacity paints a picture of a vehicle that is not just a mode of transportation but a reliable xploring partner. For families and individuals alike seeking an SUV that encompasses quality and performance, the new CR-V is not far off. Our test model touches the R1 million mark something many people are conflicted about. It retails for R1. 041, 300 to be exact.
The Executive trim trails behind at R961 000. This is where things get a little sticky for Honda South Africa. Though the product is excellent, there are few people prepared to spend this much on a car that is competing in a segment in which consumers are spoilt for choice. But then again the brand’s loyal base is still out there and is prepared to pay for their Honda.
