The Polo Vivo has become one of South Africa’s most popular cars. Many young people aspire to own a Polo as their first car. As they navigate university, corporate life, or even entrepreneurship, they often start with a Vivo before progressing up the Polo range. But don’t underestimate the Vivo – it’s not just a stepping stone for when the budget allows. It holds its own on the roads and in stature.
Thanks to the brand’s clean design and ease of use, I consider myself somewhat of a VW fan. I suspect my colleagues at Xploreza have noticed this preference despite my efforts to remain impartial. However, I often find myself attending various VW launches. So, it was no surprise when the invitation to the new Polo Vivo launch
appeared in my inbox.
The Plant
After an early flight from Joburg, our journey began at the vast Volkswagen plant in
Kariega, Eastern Cape. The brand’s engineering expertise was on full display for us
to explore. What stood out to me were the new infotainment system and the crucial
safety upgrade, increasing the number of airbags from two to four.
VW presented a fine selection of five distinct models to ensure everyone can choose
their favourite Vivo. These are the 1.4 55kW Vivo Manual, 1.4 63kW Life Manual, 1.6
77kW Life Tiptronic, 1.6 77kW Style Manual, and 1.0 TSI 81kW GT Manual.
The Drive
However, the real test lies in the driving. We got behind the wheel and headed to Die Walskipper, a popular restaurant and iconic spot on the beach in Jeffrey’s Bay. Known for its excellent prawn platters, it’s not your typical surfer hangout. It’s stylish and classy without being too formal—much like the Vivo.
During our drive to Die Walskipper, the car’s refinement, solid build, and impressive infotainment system stood out with its crisp and immersive sound. The Vivo offers a smooth, uncomplicated drive, free from distracting beeps and jingles. You can relax and enjoy the road without unnecessary bells and whistles. That simplicity is one of the things I appreciate most about the brand—it reflects a quiet confidence. Beyond its simplicity, the Volkswagen model excels in reliability, comfort, and practicality. It’s not designed to dazzle but to deliver what most drivers need, making it an excellent everyday car.
The Restaurant
Back at Die Walskipper, we enjoyed a hearty seafood lunch while discussing the car’s subtle yet notable improvements in spaciousness. Although there was a shared desire for a USB-C slot, VW’s provision of an adaptor demonstrated their attentiveness to driver needs.
The return journey to the Boardwalk Hotel was smooth and comfortable, with the car’s solid engineering providing a reassuring sense of safety and reliability. This Volkswagen may not be flashy, but it meets daily driving needs.
