Most of us dash out the door in the morning with keys in hand, children in tow, and our minds already racing through the day ahead. The school run, traffic, meetings and errands. But what if we told you that just ten minutes before your first drive of the week could help prevent an accident, save you money, or even save a life?
When it comes to basic vehicle checks, many of us have become a bit too reliant on technology. Last week, I hit a pothole in my jalopy and had to crawl for about a kilometre to the nearest garage. By the time I got there, the rim was bent and the tyre was completely shredded. It was a nightmare. As I retold the story of what happened, my son casually mentioned that he had noticed that same tyre had a slow puncture. I could not help but think that if I had paid more attention, the damage might have been far less.
That moment reminded me just how powerful the basics are. Ten minutes is all it takes to walk around your car and give it a proper check once a week. Let the technology help, but do not rely on it alone. Here is a simple routine you can do every Monday morning or even on a Sunday evening to keep your vehicle safe and your family protected.
1.Walk around your car
Yes, just a quick walk around. Look for anything unusual. Are your tyres low on air? Are there any visible leaks under the car? Is a light or indicator cracked or not working? These small things, if left unattended, can lead to bigger problems.

2.Check your lights
Check your headlights, brake lights, indicators and reverse lights. Faulty lights are not just a risk for you but make it harder for other drivers to see your intentions on the road.

3.Look at your tyres
Make sure the tread is still healthy — no bald patches or cracks. And keep an eye on pressure. Underinflated tyres affect fuel efficiency and increase the risk of a blowout. You can check the correct pressure at your petrol station.

4.Test your windscreen wipers
In our unpredictable weather, especially during summer storms, working wipers are essential. Replace blades if they leave streaks or make noises. Also, top up your washer fluid.

5.Clear your view
Inside the car, clear out clutter. That empty takeaway cup rolling under the seat? It could wedge under your brake. That pile of papers on the dash? It becomes a missile in a sudden stop.

6.Set your intention
Finally, adjust your seat, mirrors, and think about your route. Remind yourself that your goal is not just to get there, but to get there safely.

This small Monday habit is not about being a mechanic or overthinking things. It is about taking control, feeling more prepared, and knowing that you are doing your part to stay safe and alert on our roads.
Let us start the week strong. A few minutes of care could be the difference between routine and regret.
