Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) reported total sales of 11, 138 units for August, beginning to return to pre-flood levels. The company’s most recent sales are 4, 028 units higher than in July, and they have undoubtedly been helped by the Prospecton Plant in Durban’s resume of operations, despite it still being in the ramp-up phase.
However, it is the first time since April that SA’s preferred car is once again at the top of the sales rankings. TSAM did not lose its sales leadership position when its production was closed for repairs. The month of August saw the sale of 3, 417 Hilux models, 1, 129 Corolla Cross, 1, 008 Hiace Ses’fikile, and 667 Fortuner cars.
In its statement on August’s industry sales, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAMSA) notes: “Despite the increasingly difficult economic conditions, the new vehicle market remained impressively buoyant.” Domestic new vehicle sales in August 2021 increased by 5, 887 units, or 14.2%, to 47,420 units.
Urban Cruiser (1, 905), Starlet (774), and Agya (377) are more Toyota models that performed admirably, and Lexus, the company’s premium division, sold 64 vehicles overall. Twenty NX models, twelve RX models, ten LX models, and ten UX models are included. Hino sold 109 units of its truck 300-Series line, while 110 different 500-Series models were sold at retail. In addition to shipping an additional 290,000 parts out of the country, TSAM still provided no less than 1,4 million parts to its domestic dealer network.
“We are also grateful to Toyota’s family, including colleagues at the plant as well as sales and marketing teams across the country, for their relentless efforts in making ours the brand of choice. Customer service, staff, and dealers across Southern Africa have been outstanding,”
says Leon Theron, SVP of Sales and Marketing at TSAM.
