The EX90 label will be worn by Volvo’s next all-electric flagship SUV, the company has officially revealed, and it will be the safest Volvo yet. The next EX90 will carry the Swedish company’s legacy of safety, quality, and innovation firmly into the future, ushering in a new era for Volvo Cars.
One of the most cutting-edge sensors sets available will be featured in the EX90. The cutting-edge Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor, in-house developed software, the vehicle’s core computing power, and a new real-time interior sensing system will work together to bring the Scandinavian company one step closer to its vision of a future with zero collisions. The Volvo-unique suite of eight cameras, five radars, 16 ultrasonic sensors, and a cutting-edge LiDAR sensor.
According to Joachim de Verdier, head of Volvo Cars’ Safe Vehicle Automation,
“we think the EX90 is the safest Volvo ever on the road.”
“We are combining our knowledge of the external world with our more in-depth knowledge of driver attentiveness. You will be surrounded by a preventative shield of safety when all of our safety systems, sensors, software, and processing power work together, and you won’t even be aware of it until you need it.”
The class-leading LiDAR sensor, which is integrated into the EX90’s roofline, can identify pedestrians up to 250 meters away and anything as small and dark as a tire on a dark road 120 meters away, all while moving at highway speeds.
Additionally, the capacitive steering wheel contributes by detecting when the driver releases the wheel and keeping track of the stability of the steering input. The automobile will be able to assist the driver when necessary by using patented algorithms for real-time recognition of gaze patterns and steering behaviour, from sounding a simple warning signal to even safely stopping by the side of the road while alerting other road users of its hazard lights. In the end, the vehicle will be able to intervene and help the driver thanks to these new sensor systems (inside and out), but it will also be better able to predict when it’s required and how to help.
Before the global unveiling on November 9, 2022, further information about Volvo’s new all-electric flagship EX90 will be made available in the upcoming weeks.
