Mahindra has become one of South Africa’s fastest-growing brands, according to naamsa vehicle sales statistics for December, which also included final industry sales figures for the entire year 2022.
According to the report, Mahindra increased its sales volume by 78% compared to 2021. This is more than five times the market average and the highest of all vehicle brands that report their sales to naamsa. According to the naamsa sales report, Mahindra increased its total passenger vehicle market sales by 80% to 4 027 vehicles in 2022, and its light commercial sales (including the popular Pik Up and Bolero ranges) by 77% to 8 885 vehicles. Because of this rapid growth, Mahindra achieved an average monthly sales figure of more than 1000 units per month, breaking through the magical 10 000 unit per year mark for the first time and approaching 14 000 total sales for the year.
Mahindra has also been named South Africa’s fastest-growing brand for the second year in a row, and for the fourth time in the last five years. During that time, Mahindra experienced a compound annual growth rate of 23.6%. In addition, the Mahindra Pik Up was the fastest-growing bakkie brand in the market*, reaching the top of the leaderboard in growth for bakkies overall and the single cab market in particular. The XUV300, the safest car in Africa according to GNCAP, was the fastest-growing compact SUV in its addressable segment**, with 2 079 units sold by 2022.
“We can attribute our sales success in 2022 and our title as South Africa’s fastest-growing vehicle brand to our entire network, including our assembly plant in Durban, which dealt with component shortages, as well as our dealers, who supported customers on our waiting list,”
says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.
“And in the coming year, we hope to replicate our performance with the recently launched XUV700, which achieved a record number of pre-order bookings for the brand, the much-anticipated Scorpio-N SUV, and other new models that we will reveal in due course.”
On the whole, the auto industry had a much better year than in 2021.
In 2022, the entire industry grew its sales volume to 528 963 vehicles. This is 13.9% better than the previous year, despite persistent stock shortages in both electronic parts and fully built-up vehicles.
“Mahindra first entered the market in 2004 and made every effort to build a solid foundation to support our future growth. In the last few years, we have accelerated our investment with a local assembly facility, a new technical training centre, a local fitment centre for special edition models, a new, larger, and more advanced distribution warehouse and a new head office.
We believe that we are now seeing the fruit of these long-term investments, and of making South Africa our second home outside of India. We are proud to be a part of the South African landscape and of contributing to the local economy,”
Rajesh concludes.
